In a wild-type Drosophila germarium, the Dpp receptor Tkv (red) is strongly expressed in escort cells, part of the female germline stem cell niche. The germarium is also stained for Vasa (green), α-Spectrin (blue), and DNA (white). Luo et al. reveal that Tkv mops up excess Dpp released from neighboring niche cells, spatially restricting the morphogen’s ability to inhibit stem cell differentiation.

Msd1–Wdr8 are delivered by Pkl1 to mitotic spindle pole bodies, where the Msd1–Wdr8–Pkl1 complex anchors the minus ends of spindle microtubules and antagonizes the outward-pushing forces generated by Cut7/kinesin-5 in fission yeast.
