Cell trafficking into livers of mice infected with murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV). Natural killer (NK) cells mediate defense against MCMV in these tissues. Transferred fluorescently labeled populations (red/yellow) accumulate in infected livers as either inflammatory focal populations or individual cells in sinusoidal regions. NK cells comprise the major focal population. This accumulation is infection-induced and MIP-1α dependent, whereas the sinusoidal trafficking is constitutive and derived from monocyte/macrophage lineage cells.
