Histologic section of dorsal skin from a representative C57BL/6 mouse. Sections were stained with a rabbit polyclonal histamine antibody and mast cells were visualized with a peroxidase-labeled sheep anti–rabbit second antibody (brown). Sections were counterstained with hematoxylin solution (blue). The prevalence of dermal mast cells in the skin of different mouse strains correlates with their susceptibility to systemic immunomodulation by UVB radiation. In addition, mast cell–deficient mice are resistant to immunomodulation, whereas dermal reconstitution with mast cells restores susceptibility.
