An Fcγ receptor–transfected COS cell mediates phagocytosis of IgG-opsonized RBCs into phagosomes. COS cells transfected with Fcγ receptors were incubated with FITC-labeled RBCs opsonized with IgG to examine phagocytosis. In this photomicrograph the orange cytoplasm (ethidium bromide) of the COS cell contrasts with the green fluorescence of the FITC-labeled RBCs found inside vesicles. The COS cell system was further used to examine in detail the steps of the phagocytic process mediated by Fcγ receptors. See related article in this issue by Lowry et al., pp. 161–176.
